Metric's Emily Haines Takes Out the 'Knives'

While Metric frontwoman Emily Haines will release a solo album, 'Knives Don't Have Your Back,' Sept. 26, she wants everyone to know this does not signal the beginning of the end of her band.
"There's a perception that it means something's wrong," she says of the typical reaction to solo albums. "I love the music that we make, and I want that part of my life to keep going in the direction it should go."
In fact, she says the album, a quieter, more introspective collection on which she's backed by the Soft Skeleton, a group of musicians including members of Metric and Sparklehorse, will likely strengthen her main band. "I think it's going to keep this band alive. Jimmy [Smith]'s producing people's records. Josh [Winstead] and Joules [Scott-Key] are doing this thing called Bang Lime -- it's kind of like Blood Brothers without the singing, and it's really cool," she says. "I think everybody's breathing a sigh of relief that I embarked on this, because it's giving everybody some more space to have a life."
