'Baby I'm Yours,' Arctic Monkeys
From 2006's 'Leave Before the Lights Come On' (EP)
Disclosure: I'm old enough to be the dad of the boys in Arctic Monkeys. I point this out as a way of illustrating that I'm a child of the vinyl age. As such, I'm admittedly leery of some of these newfangled music technologies, such as MP3s and the like. I still want my music, consumerist sucker that I am, delivered to me as tangible, breakable, scratchable things with artwork, liner notes, decoder rings, etc. The idea of snapping off a piece of an album and buying a single track just seems foreign to me.
So I'm proud to announce I've just made my first-ever purchase of a track from an online music store, and the song that holds that honor is Arctic Monkeys' cover of the 1965 smooth soul hit 'Baby I'm Yours,' originally by my beloved Barbara Lewis. I'm not really a huge fan of the four lads from Sheffield, England, but this winsome version, faithful but not fawning, with some adept crooning by Alex Turner, maintains the sultry essence of the original by veering away from the group's neo-Britpunk sound just enough to tickle the ears (and wallet) of this soul music fan.
Hear the song after the jump.
