'Cold December,' Matt Costa
From 2006's 'Songs We Sing'
The first time I heard this song on the radio, I quickly jotted it down thinking it would be great for my "Workout Shuffle" playlist. I didn't really concentrate on the lyrics -- just Matt's voice and the upbeat melody. But the second time I heard it, I actually listened to the words. Damn! Having just been through a painful breakup, 'Cold December' moved from "Workout Shuffle" to "Kleenex Shuffle." "I have not failed to be what you'd expect of me/Swallowing glass just to stay pure," Costa laments. But he's not another James Blunt, slitting his wrists over the one who got away. Sure, it'll make you think of that person who broke your heart, but it'll also make you break a sweat.
