Ian Astbury Closes Doors on Manzarek, Krieger

Former Cult singer Ian Astbury, who has been touring with Doors keyboard player Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger first as the humbly named Doors of the 21st Century and then as the more evocative Riders on the Storm, has announced that he will be ending his relationship with the duo.

It's a crying shame that Astbury won't get the opportunity to revisit the career high points of legendary Doors frontman Jim Morrison. Unlike the original Mr. Mojo Risin', he'll never get to take his "little Lizard King" out for an onstage walk, become a bearded, bloated blob or expire in a Paris bathtub -- or at least do any of those things as a member of the Doors.

Let's hope someone will be kind enough to vandalize his headstone someday.

'Forty years after Ian Astbury is dead, not a great many people will care. JIM MORRISON created an original genre of rock music and is never given the credit he truly deserves.'

That's because Ian Astbury isn't WELL overated. I do love The Doors, but Morrison wasn't the god some people make him out to be.

havin just seen the dvd L.A.woman live, with ian ,and having been lucky to see him, with the doors 21 a few years ago.he was in my eyes, the only guy for the job.i believe jim wouldve been happy, to have such a great singer as ian astbury ,doin justice to a ledgand ,that was taken way before his time.i never got the chance to see jim live, but thanx to ian for bringing the doors music, into this century ,ian was true to himself and to the music of the doors .

I think that a perfect fit would be with the remaining members of STP.It would be an elevation for both groups even if it resulted in one cd.Also Ian Astbury forming his own band is not bad.He should talk Pete Shelley out of retirement.Awesome.

Forty years after Ian Astbury is dead, not a great many people will care. JIM MORRISON created an original genre of rock music and is never given the credit he truly deserves.
Astbury created nothing and its somewhat sad that the other Doors think they can create and perform even though JIM MORRISON is gone,as THE DOORS, and that its something that can be overlooked, that you can simply have a stand-in taking Morrison's place; not possible.

I have always been a fan of The Cult, and I am also a Doors fan. I think Ian was the best man for the job as lead singer of the New Doors. Ray and Robbie couldn't have made a better choice. Unfortunately, there are always those who will be eager to criticize the new music of an old band for one reason or another. In this case, because Ian just happens to resemble Jim Morrison and have a similar low, dreamy voice, which was clearly there before he ever became a part of the new Doors (Obviously a big reason they chose him people). I noticed this before ever knowing that Ian was a fan of the Doors. I believe he is one of the great talents of our time and hasn't received the recognition he should with his band, the Cult. In my opinion, they had a unique sound that stands out and sounds great to this day. I hope the Cult continues to make music that we can all get a chance to hear. You are AWESOME Ian!!!

As more of a fan to the cult than the doors... i really couldn't attest to how much ian astbury is/has attempted to fill jim morrison's shoes; however, that isn't the issue here. the whole point of the entertainment industry is to alleviate the boredom of the mundane/ to "entertain"/ to take us away from the average... the everyday. so, to make political-type assertians that one singer/performer is trying to be like... or outdo another is jeuvenile... immature. instead, the focus should remain on the performance... was the person in question true to his/her nature... did he/she manage to entertain you? dissections like this really have no place in music/movies/books/etc... and only serve to take away from/ruin the experience for everyone who comes across such comments. in fact, over analysis of any topic is the makings for the next presidential candidate... or an aspiring high school principal.

I hope that everyone realizes that respect is the biggest part of this situation.

i have no idea if the headstone comment was towards ian but im just going to say that yes i am a kind person always will but that is wrong especially to say that doors fan or not that was just wrong!
and that whoever said that if it was a realation to ian astbury that he should just be more respectful and shouldn't say stuff like that.

i believe that ian astbury is one of the most phenomonal singers ever if it weren't for him i would not be here i believe that people can have their on opinion but im telling u this the bull crap between relating ian to jim needs to stop people need to realize ian is himself he is NOT JIM MORRISON he has even said that people need to respect ian for ian he is not nor hasnt been trying to be like jim morrison yes he sang with the doors for awhile but all the legal crap is between the origianl doors and it shouldnt be blamed for any reason on ian ian sang with the doors because he wanted to have fun and it was an honor just to perform with the doors because they are legendary but all this crap about jim and ian being like jim is bull crap. I believe that ian did the right thing by leaving the doors because they were putting him through a lot media especially. I also believe that ian should at least be appologized to for being put through that. the bull crap of all this morrison stuff needs to end leave ian alone, and just respect him for himself and see that. I believe that all this morrison crap is for the birds and should end and that ian astbury deserves major respect and that if this crap keeps going on and if i keep hearing all this stuff more and more im going to keep talking. and if people who want to know especially cult fans who i am standing for that person is Ian Robert Astbury.
