wow. strikes me as a complete homage to Dylan.
antagonistic relationship with audience, dont look back black & white backlighting, rolling thunder review band.....

The start of the video the panning from left to right of the band until the camera fixes on Conor reminds me of the sound stage performance of "The Weight" on The Band's "Last Waltz". Even the motion of the violin/fiddle player looks like Rick Danko's movements. Very cool.
Is it just me or does Conor look a lot like Matthew Sweet now?
Joeat 2-24-2007
awesome... can't wait for the new album. Conor looks remarkably clean.

Not to mention the violin, which sounds like it could have been lifted directly from Desire ("Black Diamond Bay", esp.) -- but in a good way.
There's too much crowd noise to make it a video I'd want to watch more than once, though. Detracts from the song.

I love the song, the band's sound, and the singer's look & voice, but I didn't like all the booing. Why would anyone want to show that in their video? Weird.

anyone else think the verses sound EXACTLY like "haligh, haligh, a lie, haligh"???
mandevat 2-23-2007
the verses do remind me of haligh haligh good observation sweetheart

I liked the video..I'm just a big fan of black&white, retro..stuff like that. And maybe it is a homage to Dylan and maybe it isn't..but I think people are seeing this as an actual live performance and he got booed..but it's just a music video. As far as I can see, he is in fact lip syncing because even when he gets hit with stuff he never misses a beat. They're not ACTUALLY booing him. When I first got here, I thought the headline meant he did Dylan in a concert and got booed for it..not that he did some music video that vaguely resembles Dylan.

I don't know enough about the band but that video looked so incredibly real and tragic but yet bubbling with comedy! I thought that the song had good lyrics but the crowd was a bit overdoing it.And if that was staged then it was just pure genius!

as a long-time fan of bright eyes, this video made me kinda sad. i find the song almost emotionless compared to his other work. in other songs like haligh a lie, you can tell by the strain in his voice that he poured his heart and soul into the song. alot of people didn't like that, the shake in his voice and when he shouted while singing. it just makes the song so much more powerful. this new stuff sounds awfully mainstream. it's just not the bright eyes, not the conor that i love, and i'm quite a bit dissapointed. appearence-wise, conor's hair could use a cut and a good washing. he's so much better looking that way. the sad, dirty, depressed, usually drunk boy that would "whisper his darkest secrets into the microphone" that i know, doesn't seem to exist anymore. now he looks like a less happy version of jack white.

It was really sad to see the band get booed off the stage. But on the other hand, it was also heartening to see them push on through to at least finish the song!
I'm not really sure what he's singing about (it is a guy, right? loL), but I think he might offend some people by singing about burning the Koran? I'm not of any religion that reads the Koran, but I still think it's a bit offensive. Why can't bands sing about nicer things? I'm tired of artists like eminem making a ruckus all the time... But oh well, to each his own.
Oh, and I agree that the lead singer needs a haircut... lol

People change and so does the music they make. Conor isn't the "sad, dirty, depressed, usually drunk boy" anymore. After hearing the Four Winds EP, the music he's making is still brilliant. His music has gradually been becoming less emo, and more folk-rock. He's not an angsty teenager anymore I think the music is changing and progressing wonderfully.

i think the video might be saying he makes music not for the sole purpose of being judged and booed and criticized. it means shit if you don't enjoy it, it's not intended to satisfy everybody anyway. wouldn't you rather be the person you want to be through music or hide behind a facade in order to impress as many people as possible?
