They Will Rock You: Antibalas (No. 5)
- Posted on Mar 16th 2007 12:04AM by Spinner
The Deal: Take two parts African funk, add a dollop of jazz and Latin boogaloo, steep it in political and social concerns, and you'll get Antibalas. The 13-piece Brooklyn collective offer up their update on booty-shakin' '70s world-beat, which is precisely calculated to stimulate both the brain and the pelvis. Their cultural mishmosh furthers the case that politics goes down well over danceable rhythms.
Fun Fact: The group once performed a concert for prisoners incarcerated at New York City's Rikers Island jail.
Sounds Like: Fela Kuti, if the Afrobeat pioneer was from New York instead of Nigeria

This song is really raw and strikes me as more of what would happen in a studio when musicians get together to develop a composition more than the final product. It's catchy in the beginning, but gets boring after about a minute and a half.

March 17 2007 at 1:43 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySounds to me like Chicago meets Ladysmith Black Mambazo..confronted by a thunderstorm on this track..
with maybe brief visits from Booker T amd the MG-s
..but a fun ride to be with them on.
..Of course beat and horn driven..but i like it.
I didn't make it past the first 11 seconds...literally. Sounds like a kid practicing trumpet...horrendously. Even hit a clinker on the 3rd or 4th note.
