Spinner Readers Say Yes to Metallica, No to R. Kelly

With another Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction come and gone, we thought it would be interesting to ponder what future inductees might look like.We listed 25 musicians and asked you whether or not they were worthy of roaming the hallowed Hall. According to our readers, only 10 of our hypothetical picks actually deserve the honor. Of those 10, Metallica came in at a solid No. 1 with an overwhelming amount of "Yes" votes (77 percent!). This is what we call a no-brainer.
The short-haired metal gods are in good company, with Pearl Jam, Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Motley Crue following closely behind at 72, 71 and tied at 66 percent, respectively. The ladies got some love with Joan Jett (56 percent) and Sheryl Crow (51 percent), while hip-hop represented via the Beastie Boys, who ranked in 52 percent of the votes. Rounding out the fortunate inductees were Guns N' Roses, God love 'em, with 62 percent and veteran punks Green Day with 54 percent.
Meanwhile, what we believed to be sure bets got flat-out no-sirees from you fine folks. Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z and Radiohead (seriously?) got little love with only 41, 38 and 29 percent, respectively. The White Stripes and Bjork tied at 16 percent, and R. Kelly, perhaps not so surprisingly, got the least amount of votes at 14 percent.
But seriously, though. Radiohead? No? C'mon.

Where the Hell is Def Leppard?? They're the second biggest selling act of the 80's, and have two albums selling over 10 million copies each, in Pyromania, and Hysteria!! The White Stripes, Bjork? Are you serious????

if you do a post, you must expect rebuttal.
are you on the nominating committee ?
as with everything else, the nominating process is political.
you can't tell me that it was just a coincidence that the late Hilly Kristal (founder of cbgb's), just happen to be on the committee and 3 groups he was responsible for discovering, talking heads, blondie and the ramones all were inducted in the space of 3 years.
are you telling me that dusty springfield was a bigger influence on female rockers than ann & nancy wilson (heart) ?
in your diatribe, you mentioned "surf" music which i would consider to be "trop rock" today.
you can't tell me that you can't listen to tropical rock today and not think of jimmy buffett !
but you know and i know that as long as jann wenner is alive, jimmy will NEVER be inducted into the r&rhof.
face it. the rock hall is just another division of the rolling stone magazine empire !
For information to some of the posters on here. The Rock-n-Roll Hall of fame is a museum and shrine, its not a just gold and platinum records club or popularity contest, that is just one facet of what it takes. Album sales alone or how how high you get on the charts does not guarantee one entry into its halls. There actual inducties are people like Bill Monroe who is the Grandfather of Bluegrass music and Robert Johnson who was probably the most influential Bluesman ever leading to the likes of Eric Clapton and Jimmie Page to pick up guitars. The point is, induction has more to do with influence and impact socially and musically on society and future artist and effects they had on the business of Rock-n-Roll or the industry in general. The Inductees are only a small portion of the actual Rock Hall, it is full of other temporary exibits and history that reads well of things like classic rock, punk, grunge, pop, country, rap, hip hop, surf and disco just to name a few, which are all decendents of what people like I mentioned earlier and many others who are actual inductees, had influence on. So I would expect to see names that maybe someone would consider non traditional rockers in there or maybe who were not chock full of #1 hits but thier impact or contribution was greater and I expect that maybe some people who might have sold 100,000,000 albums not be there because frankly they really did not make a huge impact or conrtibution otherwise. People in the industry itself and the committee are the ones who vote and I am guessing that is because they have lived it and have more knowledge then we do as to why someone should be inducted. I am not posting to debate who is good, bad, popular or influential, just to point out what the process is so maybe people will understand better. My 2 cents.

What I don't get is why talented bands like Alice In Chains are not even being considered. They have done so much for rock. I mean come on, how can anyone choose Eddie Vedder over Layne Staley? Layne had such a strong presence and voice. He also had an amazing range. (Example: compare Swing On This to Dirt) Not to mention the other members. Jerry Cantrell, for one. Now that guy knows his way around a guitar. I don't understand why Kurt Cobain was considered better. Seriously. You can't even compare the two. Jerry is a whole 'nother level, man. As for the other people on the list...they aren't even rock. R. Kelly? Justin Timberlake? What a bunch of bull. Hopefully people will actually start using their minds for once and talented people can be rewarded...instead of posers and idiots.

If you're going to honor something, things like continuity, productivity, creativity, longevity, and the undeniable ability to still ROCK live or in the studio ought to matter more than being the critics' darling at any one point in time. When these guys from Canada finally get in, it won't be because of pretty-boy looks, choreography, or attention-getting stunts,; it will be on sheer merit. Metallica or Tool would not have known how to gain the armies of fans they deserve if Rush hadn't gone out and done it first.
May 26 2007 at 7:29 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replythink about this.
dusty springfield is in the h.o.f. but linda ronstadt isn't.
talking heads are in the h.o.f but chicago isn't.
of the current-day groups, probably only pearl jam and green day will get inducted.
in about 15 years
Let me know when Rush is part of the poll and then it'll have some validity. It's a joke otherwise. As for Metallica, I can't deny their influence on the harder-edged portion of the Rock spectrum and they should be inductees one day, but I'd almost keep them out just for the total & utter crap they have released since the 'Black' album.

HELL I THOUGHT REAL ROCK AND ROLL AND THE HALL OF FAME WERE NOT ABOUT BEING PUNKS AND SELL OUTS TO STUPID POLITICAL CORRECTNESS B.S. INSTEAD OF THOSE DEADHEADS ON THE LIST THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN FILLED WITH NAMES LIKE MOODY BLUES, PAT BENETAR,RATT.....AND WHERE IN THE HELL IS BOSTON...EVEN AFTER BRADS UNFORTUNATE SUICIDE COULDN'T THESE FOOLS PUT PROBABLY THE GREATEST AOR BAND EVER ON THIS LIST ON NEXT YEARS LIST OF NOMINEES? IT'S A SLAM DUNK NOMINATION AND ABSOLUTELY REDICULOUS THAT THEY HAVEN'T BEEN PUT ON THE LIST!!!! BOSTON SHOULD HAVE BEEN INDUCTED YEARS AGO AND HAS A GREAT CASE FOR GETTING THE THE BIGGEST SCREW JOB FROM THE HALL EVER. THE REALLY SAD THING IS THAT I THOUGHT THEY WERE ALREADY IN AND DIDN'T KNOW IT UNTIL MARCH WHEN I READ ABOUT BRAD DELPS' APPARENT SUICIDE. THESE FOOLS NEED TO DO A SERIOUS GUT CHECK AND REMEMBER WHAT ROCK IS AND NOT SOME POLITICAL CORRECTNESS CRAP THAT THEY CONTINUE TO DRIBBLE EVERY YEAR. HELL,PUT ME ON THE BOARD AND I WILL FIGHT THE SYSTEM AND SWEEP ANY P.C. CRAP RIGHT OUT THE DOOR.

After the Runaways broke up (after touring w/ the Ramones and others), Joan Jett produced the album "G I" by the Germs, then went on to solo success after 23 major record labels turned her down, so she became the first female punk/hard rock artist to own her own record label (25 years ago), Joan Jett has influenced bands from the slits, the raincoats, the go gos, the bangles, the pretenders, L7, babes in toyland, bikkini kill, the donnas, the eyeliners (on her blackheart label) and countless other bands, both female, and male. Joan Jett ABSOLUTELY, as the godmother of punk, Mother of the riot girrrl movement, and the Queen of Rock, should be inducted in the rock n roll hall of fame! She is the female Chuck Berry, and she doesn't "give a damn about a bad reputation!"
