When Mariah Carey isn't hanging with her kids and hubby Nick Cannon or beefing…
The 20 Worst Lyrics Ever: No. 15

"Leaving was never my proud"
--R.E.M.'s 'Leaving New York'Sorry, Michael, but we scoured all of our reference books, and "proud" just doesn't wash as a noun. Lions do live in prides, but we don't see the relevance.

Nope. Love "Leaving NY Was Never My Proud." Total Stipean genius there!

"The best soy latte that you ever had," from Drops of Jupiter by Train.
"When you breathe, I want to breathe the air for you" - Bon Jovi. Cheese.

April 06 2010 at 1:55 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDuring the last decade, I have noted a growing tendency among Americans further to butcher The Queen's English by converting nouns to verbs, usually transitive. I think it started with that old recently deceased career military bureaucrat, Alexander Haig, telling a congressional committee, "I'll have to caveat my response." A more recent but equally ghastly example: "Pimp my [insert noun]." But Mr. Stipe managed to convert an adjective into a "noun." I must confess that this is a new one on me.

August 14 2009 at 11:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIf all songwriters only followed correct grammar and standard forms of words, then there would be a hell of a lot less creativity in music. To be original, which I consider tons more valuable in music than proper grammar, you've got to break the rules a little. Do things your own way, as R.E.M. has done here. We understand what he means by this line, so he's successfully conveyed his message. Is that not enough?
