The 20 Worst Lyrics Ever: No. 5
- Posted by Spinner

"But if this ever-changing
world in which we live in ..."
--Paul McCartney and Wings' 'Live and Let Die'
Dangerous combination: Sir Paul having so much money and prepositional phrases being so cheap. Any junior-high English teacher would take points off for everything after "world."
Editor's Note: Oops, we originally had "in" instead of "if." (Thanks for correcting us, commenters!) But the rest of it -- "in which we live in" vs. "in which we're livin'" -- is still debatable. Either way, everything after "world" is unneccessary, and that was our point. Macca fans, don't despair, we love him too -- read our I Freakin' Love This Song about 'Heart of the Country.'

You've got #5 wrong. The lyric is:
"But if this ever-changing
world in which we're livin' ..."
According to Oxford, "There’s no necessity to ban prepositions from the end of sentences. Ending a sentence with a preposition is a perfectly natural part of the structure of modern English."
So, it is not necessarily incorrect to end a sentence with a preposition. With all the bad lyrics out there, this one is hardly awful enough for such a list. PTxS
LIke Boheme said, isn't it "world in which we're living"? Come on, give Paul a little credit...

May 17 2011 at 8:07 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOk, so the line wasn't Shakespeare. You really going to try to tell Sir Dr. James Paul McCartney, M.B.E. how to write a song?
Remember Jim Morrison's take on the English language..."you know they are a liar"?
it saddens me to see such classics deemed to have "worse lyrics" than the computer-written crap that's being spoon-fed to the masses today. Apparently the assclown who made this list has no concept of good music vs. wannabe crap designed to cater to people with a grade school iq
