Billy Joe Shaver Shoots Man in the Cheek

Texas singer-songwriter Billy Joe Shaver has some great new material to write the kind of song he's famous for. He shot a man Saturday night ouside a bar in Lorena, Texas.

Shaver's attorney Joseph Turner, who has also represented Willie Nelson and Matthew McConaughey, says the country star acted in self-defense. He claims the unidentified stranger was drunk when he followed Shaver into Papa Joe's Texas Saloon and threatened him with a knife. The scuffle eventually moved outside of the bar, where Shaver reportedly shot the man in the cheek. The man was reportedly alert and talking on his way to the hospital and is expected to fully recover.

Shaver rose to fame in the early '70s, writing hits for Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson. His own hits include 'Georgia on a Fast Train' and 'I'm Just an Old Chunk of Coal (But I'm Gonna Be a Diamond Someday).'
