"I am ... I said
To no one there
And no one heard at all
Not even the chair"
--Neil Diamond's 'I Am ... I Said'
Don't feel bad, Neil, my Lazy Boy recliner never listens to a thing I say. --James, Chesapeake Beach, Md.

Apparently, no one who has commented on this has had any relation to depression.
I screamed BEING and there was no answer.
Even from what I was BEING on.
He is a master of horrible lyrics, I don't know why these lines were chosen over his hideous "Songs she sang to me; songs she brang to me":

February 17 2010 at 12:06 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt's poetic. Must people take everything so literally? If I say "The mountains called my name" do you really think they're shouting out my name? Or do you think perhaps they're so appealing that I feel I have to go out and marvel at their beauty?
Yes, if you take these lyrics seriously, they seem very stupid. But you have to take them as something deeper! This man is searching for his identity, and no one cares! He feels so pointless, so useless, that even a chair seem more important, even emptiness has more presence than him! It's quite sad, really.
Or...maybe he meant it literally. In which case...yeah...it seams a little stupid.
There is nothing wrong with these lyrics. At least you know what he is saying - unlike so many songs today!

We Go Riding On The Wings Of A Flea.
I can see the resolution to Neil's catastrophe now:
"Mr. Diamond, your Barcalounger is on line two..."
Perhaps chairs don't listen, but lookie here at what they do in their spare time....

If a chair can have legs, why not ears? He feels so alone, he questions his very existence and his ability to impact, here it comes--even the chair!
Is it so hard to empathize with another human being. Is music today only understood as a tool to drown out one's thoughts and emotions? Real anguish is not when verizon has dropped your call. It is when you wish you could get even a chair to hear your voice.
