IFLTS: 'Who the F***,' PJ Harvey

'Who the F***,' PJ Harvey
From 2004's 'Uh Huh Her'

Nobody throws a tantrum like Polly Jean Harvey. Her rollicking, lo-fi grit rock is sexed-up and stripped-down, creating an ambivalent urge to either fear or f***. Categorize this one as the former.

This barefaced kiss-off from 2004's 'Uh Huh Her' -- a schizophrenic return to Harvey's unpolished ways -- is a choke-hold straight out the gate. "Who the f***/Do you think you are?/Get out of my hair" she warns amidst a frenzied tension of distorted guitar chugs and glam-stomping backbeats. Thirty seconds in and the pint-sized rocker reminds us she's "not like other girls" -- as if we could forget -- while checking back in a minute later with a "F***/F***/F***/You." You know, in case the message was lost in translation the first time 'round.

Despite all the brash sentiments, Harvey often cites this tune as a tongue-in-cheek knee-slapper. And I'm laughing ... if only because I'm afraid not to.
