With a Bullet: Today's Charts

It's difficult to gauge whether Trent Reznor's unorthodox marketing schemes for the new Nine Inch Nails album, 'Year Zero,' were a success. We're going to need more artists leaking USB drives of their upcoming releases in toilet stalls before we can crunch the data. But this we can conclude: The good news is that the record debuted at No. 2, with 188,000 sold. Not so good is that Avril Lavigne, using such time-tested and true marketing techniques as being young, pretty and female, beat NIN to the toppermost of the poppermost by the tune of 100,000 copies with her 'Best Damn Thing' album, also in its first week. - And the long coattails of 'American Idol' do whatever coattails metaphorically do for yet another former finalist: Carolina country crooner Bucky Covington's eponymous LP debuted at No. 4, with 61,000 in sales.
- Our Weekly Winehouse Watch continues, as our Amy's 'Back to Black' is showing legs as long as those barely propping up the brassy British boozehound. Just like last week, this No. 14 record sold in the mid-30,000 range, for a six-week total of 263,000.
- No three-word alliterative phrase can adequately describe the confounding staying power of Nickelback. The commercial Canadian combo's (whoops, there I go again!) 2005 release, 'All the Right Reasons,' sits snugly at No. 21 after a jaw-slackening 81 weeks on the charts and more than 5 million in total sales -- which, with the exchange rate, is only 3.8 million American.
The top five albums for the week ending April 22:
- 'Best Damn Thing,' Avril Lavigne (287,000 in 1st week)
- 'Year Zero,' Nine Inch Nails (188,000 in 1st week)
- 'Now 24,' Various Artists (68,000 in 4th week; 601,000 total)
- 'Bucky Covington,' Bucky Covington (61,000 in 1st week)
- 'Waking Up Laughing,' Martina McBride (55,000 in 3rd week; 241,000 total)
