Sting: Tax Man

While pursuing a music career, Sting, under his civilian name of Gordon Sumner, had what he calls a "soul-destroying day job" as a tax officer with the Inland Revenue in Manchester, England. He also worked as a bus conductor and construction laborer before becoming a teacher.

another musician has done the same thing. John McVie(bassist) for Fleetwood mac as a tax trainee before pursuing music for the rest of his life.

His memoir "Broken Music", is extremely interesting reading, and really details his life before The Police made it big.

Missing from this list of former jobs for Sting: English teacher, which he also was back in his native Newcastle. So the dude was obviously very well educated and entrenched in professional career life before he decided to get into music, which isn't bad at all, no matter how much the guy doth protest.
