I got dumped by my girl of 4 years and listened to this song over and over and cried my little eyes out. A great song, he must've gotten dumped too when he wrote it.

Beck's Sea Change album is a modern masterpiece.
It will stand the test of time because hearts are broken every day.

"Goodbye My Lover" by James Blunt is hauntingly sad and beautiful at the same time. Another truly sad one is "Last Kiss" (oldie but most recently recorded by Pearl Jam).

Only Moby's "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?" comes close to this Beck song, in this experimental genre. I knew a friend with some substance problems and an ego too big to let go of those problems, so 'Lost Cause' always spoke to me on that level -- someone I loved but couldn't save.

Beck's entire Sea Change album is so heart-breaking. It's my favorite of his though; absolutely beautiful. You can tell how depressed he was after his break-up with his long time girlfriend.

I agree with Teag's. The first few times I heard Last Kiss I got all misty.
This song is genius, as is Beck. Can you believe this is the same guy who came out with "Loser"? (I still have the lyrics to that memorized, talk about worthless trivia.)

For me, Beck's greatest heart-breaker is "Feather In Your Cap"... it was used in the film Suburbia, and can be found as a b-side on the Sissyneck single. It makes me feel wonderfully melancholy every time I put it on.
"There's no map that can tell you where you are... you're in between things that only go halfway."

I agree with Nicole Marie, Feather in you Cap (extended version) is much more sad than Lost Cause. Rowboat is saddest than it too. But I really love Lost Cause because was the song that put me into Beck's world :)

I've never heard this song but I've just added another song to my list of great songs that an artist has penned my thoughts for me. That's why they're artists!

And how could I forget "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor! It was written about his time spent in a mental hospital. His friends had all chipped in together to get money for her to come visit him. Her plane crashed on the way...

Excellent choice. The entire Sea Change album is the epitome of heartbreakingly beautiful... Lost Cause tears me up every single time.

I love this song. Tom, I listened to this song over and over again. My boyfriend and I broke up a month ago, and he was truly the first guy out of all the boyfriends I've had, that I can honestly say I loved. We broke up because we wanted different things and the last thing I told him was "I'm a lost cause" so this song really hit close to home.

The sad song i love is "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" by oasis when i'm sad i'll listen to that song over and over again. It's kinda hopefull but so emotional it's the best

To James, regarding his comment on "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor:
That's not what I heard. According to a local DJ who does a lot of research on these things, the "Susanne" Taylor refers to committed suicide (I don't know how or why), and he did in fact start writing down the song the day after "They let me know you were gone."
