The 25 Most Exquisitely Sad Songs in the Whole World: No. 25

There's no shortage of sad songs about rainy days and lovers who don't bring flowers. And then there are songs that truly bring the pain -- songs so despairing they can make us wonder why we even bother. Here are 25 little ditties so crushing, they could knock Dick Cheney to his knees.

    'The River'
    Bruce Springsteen (1980)

The Breakdown: Premature pregnancy, marriage and a weepy harmonica crush the dreams of a young couple.

The Waterworks: "We went down to the courthouse/And the judge put it all to rest/No wedding day smiles, no walk down the aisle/No flowers, no wedding dress."

Casualty Count: One couple's age of innocence.

I'd have to say the Rascal Flatts Song SKIN(Sarabeth). It makes me a 35 year old man with kids of my own start balling like a baby.

"Seeds and Stems" by commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen has 'em all beat. Just try and top dead dogs, drugs (or lack thereof) and divorce. It's a depression trifecta!

You guys are all forgetting "Cavernous sorrow and worthlessness" by Abysmal Sorrow. Or "tears from a grieving heart" by Mournful Congregation. Or "Angels of distress" by Shape of despair. Even "Death - Pierce me" by silencer didn't make it on here.

They are all pretty sad. Much sadder than these songs.

The saddest song ever written is without a doubt - who wants to live forever by Queen.

The song is from the Highlander soundtrack and played when Connor McLeod (who is immortal) outlives his wife.

It was played at Freddie Mercury's funeral and there wasn't a dry eye anywhere. This song will make the hardest case break down in tears.

Other sad songs worthy of mention are:

    Van Diemens Land - U2
    Everybody Hurts - REM
    Last Kiss - Pearl Jam
Nothing compares to you - Sinead O'Connor
