I remember this song when it was played in Dawson's Creek. I can't remember the episode but, no doubt, I'm sure it was a sad scene.

first of all in the song he makes clear WHY she's the brick that's pulling him down. "it's not me you're dying for" says that he actually wanted the kid. Let's say for instance the girl realized she either A) couldn't take of it or b) didn't want the responsibility of taking care of it as she was a teen AND SHE'S drowning him with HER CHOICE and then he goes on to say almost like maybe a half hearted I told you so with "now she's feeling more alone than she ever has before"

Funny, I always thought this song was about his girlfriend dying of cancer. The part where he says now that he's found someone, he's feeling more alone ... meaning that he loves her, but she will die and he will be alone, losing the love of his life.

Great song, love it. i have listened 2 ben folds for a long time so its great to see that he's getting a little recognition for his amazing yet overlooked talent. i prefer a live version of just ben and a piano, though. he explains "...i didn't really want to write the song from any kind of political standpoint or make a statement, i just wanted to reflect what it feels like..." i appreciate his guts for writing about such a powerful topic that most artists wouldn't because of all the conflict surrounding abortion. people don't realize how hard it really is on a couple emotionally to get abortions with all the guilt and what-ifs. claps for ben. like this folds tune? check out his piano skill in 'Fred Jones Part 2', 'Carrying Cathy', 'Still Fighting It', 'the Luckiest' or his less mellow, upbeat stylings in 'Rockin' the Suburbs' or 'Fired'.
Oh, and "Sonney" needs either a better sense of humor or a life...the lady-lovin' comments are really startin to bum me out!

I was only 10 when this song came out, and I never knew what it was about because I was so young. You never know what kind of impact a song will have on you until you grow up. I remember growing up and listening to this song, totally not even knowing what it meant. It is a beautifully sad song, though.
Hmm...quite a redundant comment isn't it?

I found this a little too perky-sounding to classify as "Exquisitely Sad". I think a much better fit for this indie-sound slot on the Top 25 most-sad would be Travis "As You Are" from 'The Man Who'. I almost can't listen to that entire album without getting melancholy.

there's several sad songs on this album. "selfless, cold, & composed" is my favorite (sad one). i always pop it in when i want to wallow in self-pity about a failed relationship... not that that's a fun thing to do. it's like pushing on a bruise.

I appreciate this song being included in this list, and it is here appropriately so. But it saddens me that the first in the casualty category is called a "pregnancy" rather than his "baby". I don't know anyone who mourns not being pregnant any more, but the loss of a child may be the greatest a person can experience.

One of the best songs of all time, sad or not.

She's a brick? A brick has weight.
A song about being irresponsible, impregnating a girl, and murdering a child.
All because they did not have the 5 seconds to put on a condom?
Sad? You bet your ass it is sad. It is sad he can write a song about being an irresponsible fuck and you guys get gooey.
It is a song about an irresponsible murderer.
I am embarrassed to even be a part of this generation.
Aylaat 7-26-2009
irresponsible murderer? julie, what would have happened if they didnt have any money? no place? the childs life would have been hell.! whos to say you can deside for a person or not. I get where your comeing from, but its not your desision! Its the parents choice!
