    'I Know It's Over'
    The Smiths (1986)

The Breakdown: For Morrissey, the world's loneliest singer, life isn't just over -- it never really began.

The Waterworks: "As I climb into an empty bed/Oh, well, enough said."

Casualty Count: One lonely soul ... any minute now.

I am so glad The Smiths made it here. But basically all of their songs are exquisitely depressing.

How soon is now? Love the Smiths. Better a little rather than a lot but what a mixer.

PS: Morrisey's looks remind me of NAZI Rudolf Hess who died alone in Spandau Prison. Time for a casting call in a WW2 movie.

The Smith's, Morrissey have a treasure trove of great sad songs/lyrics..."If a double decker bus, crashes into us, to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die..."

There is nothing better out there as far as meloncally music as The Smiths. Such a great group, but the best to me is "How Soon is Now".

P.S. He is in concert here in Jersey this July.

That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore is a pretty big bummer, too. The Smiths are cool.

When you're purposely celibate, as Morrissey has claimed to be, the idea of 'climbing into an empty bed' doesn't really mean much, except the same-old self-induced distancing from others. I'd put a song like Split Enz "I Hope I Never" ahead of this one.

Brought me right back to high school...more heartbreaking than the song is that I'm twenty years past my sophmore year! Great the hear the Smiths again.

I am quite content now that one of the most saddest and beautiful songs made it to the list. Hardly anyone can sing a sad song with much sensitivity and heartache like morrisey. This song truly is a classic!

This really should have been #1. most of their stuff has an undercurrent of humor (Thre is a Light...), but this is plain emptyness!!!

Oh please tell me you got WHISKEY LULLABY by Brad Paisley....please that is the saddest song in the world! Hands down and where's Sarah Mclachlan on this list? she is the most beautiful singer and she's got plenty of sad songs. I love her!

John--LOVE "Patches" "Floating face downward in a dirty old river" and "Patches, I'm coming to you." It came out in the '60's. Didn't know anyone else remembered it!

This song definitely receives a place on this countdown. It was a pleasant surprise that it made it on. This song never fails to make me cry or remind me of highschool.
