Fountains of Wayne Get Schooled by Squeeze

Fountains of Wayne know a thing or two about songwriting but they'll get a thorough schooling this summer when they hit the road with reunited vets Squeeze and Crowded House, behind their own recently released 'Traffic and Weather' album.

"We found out through a fan that [Squeeze singer] Glenn Tilbrook was covering 'Red Dragon Tattoo' at his own shows," bassist Adam Schlesinger tells Spinner of the pairing's evolution. "Then we sort of became friends with him and that led to them offering us some dates on this reunion tour. The [Crowded House] thing just came from us begging a lot."

FOW recently got a preview of what touring with master songwriters is like when they joined Neil Sedaka on stage at NYC's Joe's Pub for a duet of 'Calendar Girl.' "We went up on stage and he's like, 'You guys remember the words?'" Schlesinger says. "We're like, 'It's the months. January ... ' That was it. So, we did remember."

With Sedaka, Squeeze and Crowded House collaborations under their proverbial belts, the band now have their eyes set on a certain pop star. "I'd like to do a duet with Justin Timberlake," Schlesinger says. "Whatever it was would sell a lot."

Fountains Of Wayne wish they could be as talented as Crowded House. Also -- they're going on without Paul Hester? Aw. It won't be the same, but it's good that they're pushing on. I agree with #3 too in that a Squeeze reunion is damn near unmissable. I hopehopehope they swing on by my neck of the woods (Texas). Please, guys? Pretty please? I won't even so much as make a peep when Fountains Of Wayne do their set. Just as long as I get to watch Squeeze and Crowded House I'll be happy. Happyhappy. Also: I wonder how Glenn Tillbrook looks. He was always a cutie and a half, so I wonder if he's aged well. Come to think of it, I had a crush on '80s-era Neil Finn and I wonder if HE'S aged well too, so, hm. Yes, folks, hormones + great tuneage = happy, happy me.
