the first time I heard this song I literally sobbed. I've listened to thousands of times and I still tear up every single time.

THIS SONG IS ALWAYS MAKING ME CRY WHEN MY PAPAW DIED THE ONLY THING I LISTENED TO WAS THIS SONG IT REALLY MADE ME APPRECIATE ME DAD, MOM, AND GRANDMOTHER! I REALLY NEVER REALLY GOT OVER HIS DEATH WHEN I GO TO MY GRANDMOTHERS HOUSE I THINK HE IS STILL THERE AND MY COUSIN ALWAYS ASKED ME WHO IM LOOKING FOR AND THEN I FEEL HORRIBLE BECAUSE I STILL MISS HIM SO MUCH EVEN THOUGH IT WAS A YEAR AGO IT WILL BE TWO ON JUNE 15 AND I WONT BE ABLE TO LIVE WITH MY SELF ON THAT DAY

First of all, it is a sad song. But lets get one thing straight, This song was written and performed 5 years earlier by Charlie Robison. I hate that the Dixie Chicks are getting credit for this with no mention of the man who penned this beautiful song. That's sad.

Bruce Robison wrote Travelin Soldier. Sorry for the error

I'm in the army. i remember when bruce robison first released the song as a single. we got it during one his uso tours on a single. i iked it then and still like it now that the dixie chicks did it.it gives those that have never served or who have had families that served an insight into the emotions that come from being over there. beautifully written and masterfully done by both sides.

Bruce Robison is Emily Robison's brother-in-law, so no wonder they recorded this amazing song. If you look on the album, he is listed as being the writer. This was the first song on this album that grabbed at me.

I've heard Bruce Robsion play this song many times. And I've also heard him say to folks at his shows that one of his biggest thrills was being at a Chicks' concert and hearing 20,000 people sing along to it. I don't think Bruce minds one bit that the DC expanded the audience for this beautifully tragic song. And before folks went all loopy about innocuous comments, uttered by many Texans long before and many times since, this version was a #1 hit, something that didn't happen with any other recording of Bruce's fantastic song.

I bought this album and this used to be my favorite song but it would always depress me so much. I cry almost everytime I hear it.

this song has always had meaning to me.... growing up all my friends were and became military... now my husband is a soldier... may god bless him and all his comrades...

This is a good one. But I think the Chicks' "Top Of The World" gets me even more, about the dead man regretting his life, now that it is too late.

I was in third grade when my dad brought this album home. I hated hearing the song because I always start to cry. It took me a few years to be able to deal with the pain I felt, listening to it.
This song always makes me cry. It means so much, not just to army families, but to anyono who has lost someone. I agree however, that Top of the World should be on here too, as well as Heartbreak Town, off of Fly.
