'Patches'
Clarence Carter (1970)
In less than four minutes, Patches loses his father, mother, the farm, and I think the dog dies. Oh, and he has to quit school to support his siblings. Sad, absolute tearjerker definitely. --Lorrie Brainard, Coal City, IL

In The Ghetto--the saddest from Elvis or anyone. Another tearjerker--Carmen's Never Gonna Fall In Love Again. This one is especially bad-I lost my beloved husband 7 horrible months ago......Patsy

She is from the other side of the tracks, and his folks won't let him see her. She doesn't know this and thinks he just doesnt lover her anymore. Despondent, she commits suicide by drowning "in that dirty old river, that flows by the coal yards in old Shanty town". He hears his neighbor tell his father about it and he drowns himself to be "with her" A modern day Romeo and Juliet. This is one of the sadder of those teenage tragedy songs of the 60's, along with "Teen Angel" "Leader of the Pack", 'Billy and 'Sue', and "Laurie, (strange things happen), another Dickey Lee song.
