I heard this version first and like it better. I think the other is sad but this one to me, sounds like he has such a pain in his voice.

Granted, Eddie Vedder actually sounds sad about his girlfriend's death while J. Frank Wilson sounded like he pushed her in front of the other car, but this song does not hold up over multiple listens for me. It's too maudlin and sad-sacky, too aware of trying to be poignant to actually be moving.

I love this song. It's such a GUY song. He's hot-rodding around on wet roads and kills his girlfriend. Does he accept any personal responsibility? Hell, NO! Who took his girlfriend away? The Lord. The Lord did it! It wasn't me and my shitty driving, the Lord did it. As Mr. Rogers would say: "Can you say loser, I think you can." The song isn't sad, it's pathetic.

I am of the generation that grew up with the original version. No list of sad songs would be complete without this one!

This should definitly have been in the top 5. I felt that the site's list was silly. For centuries of music there are many songs much more sad than that Bettles song or Beck. Even music from the Lion King was much more difficult than some of those songs.

This would be my vote for at least the top 5. The list the site produced seemed fake for much of it. I was thoroughly disappointed in it. Only a few of the songs on that list I felt should have been there. For centuries of music there are things much sadder than that Beetles song and Beck for instance.
