While the Walkmen are very present on the scene this summer with 'Red River,' soon to be the next single from the soundtrack to mega-smash 'Spider-Man 3,' the band is already looking ahead. Frontman Hamilton Leithauser tells Spinner the group has several songs written for the next album, which they've been showcasing on tour. "We have a lot of new stuff to play, so that makes it more enjoyable for all of us," he says. "We have this song called 'I Lost You,' which is our favorite song we've ever written. We [also] have new songs that are really trumpet-based, so we've brought a trombone player and a trumpet player with us. It's the first time we've ever done that."
While the Walkman may not need much help in the way of creativity, Leithauser says the brass additions were a welcome curve ball. "We're just trying to keep everyone interested and on board," he says. "It's hard to walk in and pick up the same guitar, the same amp and stay interested. If it doesn't feel really new to you, it's not going to feel really new to someone else."
Leithauser tells Spinner the new tracks, including some "calypso-sounding" tunes, as well as one he calls a "slow waltz," are coming along well in the studio. "We have six of them recorded right now," he says. "We'd like to maybe do another six and then get it out as soon as possible. We have an appointment to go back into the studio in June, and the idea is to finish everything then but that's being optimistic."
