'Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken,' Camera Obscura
From 2006's 'Let's Get Out of This Country'
The best songs are not only sweet on the ears, but travel agents as well. If a song can whisk my mind to somewhere beautiful while my eyes rest on something boring -- like a refrigerator door or the backside of a car in traffic -- then it's love, deep and true. 'Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken' by indie's beloved Camera Obscura is one of those songs.
The tune starts off with a somber, church-like organ and quickly bursts into sunny goodness: sweetly lazy female vocals, jaunty string arrangements and jangly guitars. It all goes together like sonic peanut butter and jelly.
This song is driving down a country road in an old station wagon through miles of yellow flowers as far as the eye can see. It's a spring picnic, a midnight swim, a time warp. It's holding hands like children do and running through the sprinklers. It's fresh, bright and fun, and makes me want to dance around every time I hear it. I love it and I think you might as well.
Alison Sudol is singer-songwriter A Fine Frenzy. Her debut album, 'One Cell in the Sea,' hits shelves on July 17.
