IFLTS: 'Wake Up,' Arcade Fire

'Wake Up,' Arcade Fire
From 2004's 'Funeral'

Lately, Arcade Fire has been the band that's really seemed special to me; a band that is great lyrically and spiritually as any band to come along in a long time. 'Wake Up' is a song that feels timeless and redemptive, yet kick-ass punk rock at the same time. It's a song that feels both angry and uplifting, and it's a song written for dark days like these.

The first time I heard it was on an airplane. My girlfriend and I were trading iPods, where I played her a song and told her why I like it, and she did the same with me. She played that song and I thought, "That's wonderful. Why haven't I heard of that before?" It has that kind of crazy Dexy's Midnight Runners thing at the end, and I thought, "That's a special band."

Recently, I saw the band on 'Saturday Night Live' and thought it was awesome. I went back and got the whole catalogue.

Tom Morello is the former guitarist for Audioslave and Rage Against the Machine. He recently released a solo effort as the Nightwatchman, titled 'One Man Revolution.'
