'Human Touch'/ 'Lucky Town'
Bruce Springsteen, 1992
Rise: His 'Born in the U.S.A.' pulled off one of the great feats in pop history, placing seven singles in the Top 10.
Fall: Newly remarried and relocated to L.A., the Boss released two generally upbeat albums with little help from his longtime E Street Band. Even hard-core fans were -- gasp! -- bored silly.
Stats: 'Born in the U.S.A.' (1984), 15 million; 'Human Touch'/ 'Lucky Town,' 1 million each

A handful of songs from The River and his four efforts before that are great music. Everything else after is the same old drone...continuous and monotonous.

At the time he was settling down, having kids and wondering if everyone going through the same thing he was. At the time, I was. "Lucky Town" spoke to me. "Human Touch" was just a lark. But when it produces a classic title track that ranks with some of the best Bruce has ever done, that's a pretty good lark.

Some people do not like springsteen but maybe you should consider his true fans!? Yea I loved those two albums so please do NOT call them flops because any true springsteen fan knows that those two albums had great songs on them! And me and my family still listen to those cds. and o yea I love that song should i fall behind...great wedding song!
The Boss is the MAN
I do think they were not as impressive as ... well, any album between The Wild The Innocent and Tunnel of Love (which was actually the predecessor to Human Touch/Lucky town, not BITUSA). Even Born in the USA, while commercial and catchy and all that jazz, gave a unified snapshot of life and had a thematic consistency. For some reason, these two albums just failed to feel internally as cohesive. There are some good songs on them, and I think you could take the best songs from each of them and make a really good record. Plus I like hearing them reinterpreted in live versions. So they're not really *bad* ... they're just lacking something compared to what came before, in my opinion. In that way they're a flop. But yes, they are better than a lot of the crap albums that preceded them on the list.

I didn't GASP! Born In The USA was too commercial. Got everybody on the bandwagon...all wanting to be front runners. Listen to the older stuff, too. This man has been writing and singing awesome music for over 30 yrs. And , yes, Jim, you must have a tin ear. Do us all a favor a don't listen to him anymore...listen to your Rap crap. Music? I think not.

June 12 2007 at 10:34 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDefinately not a flop IMHO. In fact my wife & I used one of the songs from "Lucky Town" as our first dance wedding song- "If I Should Fall Behind"
