'Paul's Boutique'
Beastie Boys, 1989
Rise: The New York trio's slap-happy debut, 'Licensed to Ill,' was the first hip-hop album to hit No. 1.
Fall: Though eventually revered as a hip-hop landmark, 'Paul's' was roundly ignored by a public that wanted more 'Ill' behavior, and it gained its legendary status and much of its sales only in the past 10 years.
Stats: 'Licensed to Ill' (1986), 9 million; 'Paul's Boutique,' 2 million

I don't know if its technically a flop. I think the Beastie Boys didn't expect it to be a massive it. For it to be a flop, there has to be high sale expectations.

but, sales aside, it is one of the most influential albums of all time, and no one can deny that.
this album is sampled and reinterpreted now as much as james brown was back then
Seems like the majority of the people commenting on this list really don't understand how the list was put together... it's just about numbers and poor sales of albums, not about the quality. If it was about the quality of the music, the list would be be called the Worst Albums, not the Biggest Flops. Use your brains.

I think as a follow up album most considered it to be different and caused certain followers to stay away. It was a truly well planned album that does seperate your luke warm fans from the true fans of the Beastie Boys. Amazing that an album that sold 2 million copies is considered a flop. However, it does show that the first album will forever be looked at as ground breaking and historic in hip hop.
August 24 2007 at 6:14 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt was only a flop because Liscenced to Ill was very different, the whole let's party and get drunk thing, and then they put out a really good classic album with great lyrics and grooves that was almost a polar opposite. This joint is a great one.
August 14 2007 at 2:04 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI think many have said a mouthful here. For me the majority of the albums picked shouldn't be on this list period! It's just like on VH1 worse love songs ever, etc... Funny. Many of the songs picked were some of the biggest hits in the 80's and 90's and now its the worst? I think the voters of these albums (songs)have hearing problems or it is the new young chicken head generation who don't know there left from there right anyway.
