'Rain,' Serpico
From 1994
In the early '90s, I was introduced to a band that shaped the way I viewed independent music forever. Sure, I had Minor Threat's 12" and Black Flag tapes, but it wasn't until I saw Serpico (formerly Sleeper) play in my hometown of Staten Island that my eyes truly opened. I was blown away by the then progressive, hard-edge guitars, which featured an obvious soft spot for the D.C. post-punk sound and love for the Descendents. 'Rain' is a two-minute double-punch of hooks and harmonies laced with metal guitar harmonics. The band -- also Staten Islanders -- never achieved the level of success that they were capable, but damn this band left a lasting effect on me.
