Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich were part of the Brill Building songwriting mill in the early '60s, penning hits for several girl groups, including Phil Spector acts such as the Crystals. Having come up with the first line of the Crystals' new song, "I met him on a Monday and my heart stood still," the duo inserted the nonsense syllables "da doo ron ron ron da doo ron ron" as a place holder. Suffice to say those words not only stayed in place, they became the song's hook, propelling the single to No. 3.
