Those syllables, inspired by military marching cadence, may just be babble, but the opening verse of this pioneering rap track ended up naming an entire style of music. Thought of as lightweights by their rapper peers, New York's Sugarhill Gang nonetheless had the first hip-hop Top 40 hit. The rap community should be grateful another two-word combo from the record wasn't used to signify the genre, or we'd be calling it "breakfast toast."
