Frank Sinatra once called rock 'n' roll's lyrics "imbecilic." To prove him wrong, we've compiled 20 examples of rock at its most poetic -- which is when it doesn't concern itself with actual words.
--'Icky Thump,' White Stripes (2007)
Jack White bought a vowel and tweaked a slang term he borrowed from wife Karen Ellson to title this tune. Folks from the north of England -- a genus that includes Mrs. White -- will often yelp "Ecky Thump" when surprised or dismayed (with 'eck being a PG-13 tone-down of 'ell). The term was also employed by the comedy troupe the Goodies, who created the Ecky Thump martial art -- in which participants do battle with elongated tubes of black pudding, or, as Yanks know it, blood sausage.

Gibberish first hit the charts when the Boswell Sisters used a pig-latin like language to sing a verse on Victor records in 1925 in a song called "Nights When I am Lonely." It's been a part of hot popular music ever since.
