- Posted by Spinner
Classic Rock -- What a Drag"Girls will be boys and boys will be girls/It's a mixed-up ... world." The Kinks' Ray Davies may have been dumbfounded when his 'Lola' turned out to be a man, but the song about an encounter between a naïve young man and a transvestite ranked among Rolling Stone's Top 500 Greatest Songs of All time.

June 30 2008 at 1:04 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis whole article is SOOOOOOO boring! What IS! the big deal with "gay" people? I'm married to a transgender'd person (another 'woman'... and yes we're MARRIED... had ceremony in Netherlands) and our lives are just the same as any other married couple. Two cars, a home, pets, jobs etc. etc. . I think it's much less sane to be a fundy religious person than a 'gay' (look at how they, or you, react to so many things!). We should all just grow up and let live n let live. Bleh, "gay".... it's not just for breakfast anymore!

Actuzlly the lyrics are :
Well I'm not the world's most masculine man,
but I know what I am and that I'm a man,
so is Lola.
Know the song YOUR quoting, copied from lyrics.com
The line is "I know what I am in bed, I'm a man, and so is Lola" geez know the song you're quoting.

December 20 2007 at 10:35 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyLola's a transvestite. I saw an interview with Ray Davies on I think VH-1 a looong time ago about it. He wrote the lyrics after his manager got drunk at a nightclub one night and started dancing with what he thought was a woman....til her 5:00 shadow started showing up as the evening wore on but the manager was too drunk to care! It's still an awesome song to this very day. Anyone remember the original lyrics where 'you drink champagne and it tastes just like Coca Cola" that they had to later change to 'Cherry Cola' because the BBC wouldn't play it due to Coca Cola advertising and also copyright infringement? I remember the original version as my brother played the song to death when it was first released.
