20 Killer B-Sides: No. 16

--Bruce Springsteen (1984)
Nosed off the 'Born in the USA' album by 'I'm Going Down,' this stomping ode to -- what else? -- a muscle car was the B-side to 'Dancing in the Dark.' Four years later Natalie Cole had a huge hit with her version. Springsteen's original eventually came out on the outtakes box 'Tracks.'

Bette Midler wanted to record this song Pink Cadillac for her all rock CD No Frills in 1983. She had been singing it in concert and is actually on her VHS concert of No Frills.
Bruce Springsteen told Bette she could not record this song saying that is was meant to be sung by a man. Bette dropped the song and moved on. Bruce slapped her in the face by giving the song to Natalie Cole. I think there was room enough for all or any to record HIS song.
Oh well
It is a different song. Springsteen has had a few songs here and there w/ the same title of another tune but his own creation. This song is brilliant and great basic rock and roll tune. Clarence does some simple but powerful sax work. The odd thing about the Born in the USA album and singles is that a good portion of the b-sides were better than the tunes on the album (Pink Cadillac, Janie Don't Lose Heart, Held Up Without a Gun). Man those old vinyle singles were something special when good artists added that other tune for people.
