--Righteous Brothers (1965)
Producer Phil Spector saw 'Hung on You' as the song that might re-create the chart success of 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'.' But it was the backing side, a melodramatic cover of the well-traveled 'Unchained Melody,' that became the duo's follow-up smash. Oddly, at the time the song was revived years later in the movie 'Ghost,' the Brothers' version was available only on cassette.

People, although it is a shame regarding the black/white issue, please understand that most of the "popular" music these days stem from black sources. Rock & roll (slave-day slang for "sex) got its roots in the late 40s, then kicked into high gear in the 50s. Ironically, one of the best voices in "black" music began his career as a "crooner", whose style didn't catch on with that modern-day audience. He wanted to be a "Black Perry Como" or some-such. When he changed his style, his career took off. His name is Marvin Gaye.

Each artist put their own spin on this classic..from the instrumental version to all of the vocal versions..but you cannot deny the sheer power and beauty of The Righteous Brothers version...without the original composers writing the music and lyrics to this song...no one would have their hits behind them..and for my money, The Righteous Brothers version is undeniably one of the most beautiful versions ever recorded..think of Patrick and Demi in 'Ghost' to this song..enough said..

June 19 2007 at 2:28 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyProbably didn't bother you at all when you read that Natalie Cole's version of "Pink Cadillac" was more popular than Bruce Springsteens, though, did it? Quit race-baiting and just enjoy the music.
