20 Killer B-Sides: No. 8

--Beach Boys (1964)
Brian Wilson's melancholy masterpiece was not unlike almost every other early Beach Boys song in that it was written about a car. What was, however, different was that the song skipped the fun and frivolity in favor of a heartbreaking vulnerability that would come to define Brian's work. B-side to 'I Get Around,' the group's first No. 1 single.

It's the harmonizing. NO ONE can do it like they did it.

Listen to the very end of the song, when he sings Baby, he goes up an octave, brilliant. The song is beautiful and philosophical. As we get older are parents are dying and in our dreams. they're saying, Don't Worry Baby, thanks Brian ,you make all of us cry.

I remember reading that Brian said, He would always to make his B-Sides as good as the A-sides. Before anyone in America heard of the Beatles, I was a big Brian Wilson and Beach Boys fan. Like Chuck Berry before him, Brian put into rock and Roll what the the teenager of 1962 was thinking about. Girls, Cars, Surfing, School, and teenage angst. Heros and Villans is a good book about the boys. Thank you, Brian.

You could tell when a Beach Boys car or surfing song came on because everybody started driving fast and racing each other. But when their love songs came on, especially this one, you just drove slow and thought about someone you once loved. We were all so very deeply moved. Vicki

Gotta dig out my music again....Brian has talent and then some. We miss Dennis and Carl....let's hang on to Brian. We won't forget Al or Mike......but Brian's music was absolutely wonderfully heartbreaking.
July 07 2007 at 8:59 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI remember well when 'I GET AROUND' came out. I rushed out with and bought the 45 rpm and as always, I played a flip side. I was already hooked on their music, but I fell in love with them with this song. I never gave thought to 'talent' at that age. I remember when Dennis drowned. I had seen them in concert once. Then I found myself collecting albums. I began reading lyrics and then I recognized the 'talent'. Brian is a gifted person. I know what he must have gone through during the depressions, because I've been depressed. Some of my best poems have come when I've been depressed or extremely happy. So it was with Brian. I don't like the reference to 'lying in bed like Brian Wilson did' on a recent song on our charts. I don't think the person who wrote the lyrics to that song knows a thing about depression. I just had a wonderful walk down memory lane and I'll be digging out my albums that I can't get CDs of. I began replacing the vinyls with CDs as fast as I could. The Beach Boys were the first ones I started looking for or requesting. This was music. Thank you Brian and thank you to AL, MIKE, DENNIS, & CARL. You have given me so much joy. Don't ever let this kind of music die.
