20 Killer B-Sides: No. 9

--XTC (1987)
If Andy Partridge was unsure of the existence of God, he might have changed his mind after the out-of-nowhere success of this outtake from the 'Skylarking' album. The track's popularity on alternative radio persuaded Geffen Records to re-press the album with the song in place of another tune about the supernatural, 'Mermaid Smiles.'

Never heard of these people! Oh well, I think any band is okay! I ain't no hater!
Peace out!
I'm a huge Sarah McLachlan fan, and I love her version of this song. Until today, I had never heard the original. I have to say that I enjoy both versions equally. As someone else commented, the moods are different (Sarah's disappointed, XTC is more angry), and I think each one works well.

Per an interview with Andy at the Chalkhills XTC fan site, the girl who did the child's vocal was Jasmine Veillette, who was part of a musical family in the Woodstock NY area, where XTC was recording with Todd Rundgren producing. Great song!

AMEN
Never heard this song before.
Terrific lyrics
Excellent song. I didn't know they had stage fright as I saw them as a warm-up act in a small club in Boston in the early 1980's - lucky I guess. We took one of their promo posters off the wall and hung it in our dorm room.
