Squeeze Reunites to Split Up

In one of the year's most exciting reunions, Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook of formative British band Squeeze are back together. Difford tells Spinner, "We're back together again for the 22 or 23 shows that we're going to do and then we're going to split up again." The series of dates will bring hits including 'Black Coffee in Bed' and 'Tempted' back to the stage for the first time since 1999, but for a limited time only. "We know how long the road is going to be," Difford says, "Whereas in the past, we never knew how long [it] was going to be."The songwriting pair doesn't want to give fans the wrong idea about their reunion -- it's a friendly affair. "I wish we were doing more shows," Difford explains. "Our writing has taken two very different roads since we haven't written together in such a long time. I'm just really comfortable being me and Glenn is very comfortable being Glenn," he says.
Though the pair has broken up twice, the splits have only served to enhance Difford and Tilbrook's appreciation for one another. "My respect for him has grown 100 percent in the last five or six years," Difford says. "I've realized in hindsight the brilliance of Glenn, his arrangements, his songwriting, his singing and his guitar playing."
The new level of fondness and understanding extends to Squeeze's back catalog as well. "I respect our songs much more than I ever did when I was in the band," Difford admits. "Even though I wrote all the lyrics, I've begun to understand more personally and emotionally what some of them were about."
Along with Squeeze back catalog staples, the group has some surprises in store for their fans, courtesy of Bryan Ferry. "I went to see Bryan play recently and every fourth or fifth song he put in a song he hadn't played for many, many years, and the audience appreciated that." Difford continues, "I think that is exactly what we will be doing."
