20 Protest Songs That Matter: No. 4

--Edwin Starr (1970)
Rebelling Against: Vietnam!
Soul journeyman Starr wasn't especially political; his debut chart appearance had been a product of mid-'60s James Bond mania ('Agent Double-O-Soul'). But this cover of a Temptations album track made him one of the loudest voices of the Vietnam era. The song has lived on as a generic howl for peace, revived, most notably, by Bruce Springsteen.

I wonder if today's corporate DJs would be able to make this song a hit today?

Yes, you have the answer, NOBODY. I have never heard a word from those who used to write me from Nam since we left. If this aggravates you, then think of losing your friends to a corrupt system. Maybe Springsteen should have written it instead of Born in the USA where he had the gall to write about how we vets felt. It could have been "Go to the Killing Fields."
December 12 2007 at 6:33 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis is a fantastic song...way before Jackie Chan used it. I grew up in Oakland and Berzerkley. This was the theme song of many. Perfect timing for what was going on, of course many were perfect during that time of upheaval. First place I got teargassed for protesting and it was worth it. Fantastic lyrics, fantastic music and even more fantastic singer and band! Oh and in case anyone wants to ask what color I am... I am the color of all and none. I'm a believer in us fighting to unite REGARDLESS of our color. Guess I learned that in Oakland.
December 12 2007 at 4:23 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyRevived by Bruce Springstein? I wish to heck they'd draft him..no one else..just him. If it wasn't for his capitalizing on 9-11 he'd be back singing in dives in NJ and we would have peace not having to hear about him again. Anything for buck. Edwain Starr made this song a winner and Bruce singing it is an insult to the man. Of course Bruce can't sing, so there's your trouble..War..good God y'all, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing ..say it again! same goes for Springstein..never a guy I couldn't stand more. Don't let him ruin this great song! Edwin Starr ROCKS..oh BTW Suzanne.. women weren't drafted in the Vietnam era.. put the pipe away..
