20 Protest Songs That Matter: No. 8

'Maggie's Farm'
--Bob Dylan (1965)

Dylan, of course, is the definitive protest singer, having given the world such inevitable rally hymns as 'Blowin' in the Wind' and 'The Times They Are A-Changin'.' The centerpiece of the infamous "electric" performance at Newport, 'Maggie's Farm' is Dylan's uber-protest song: It was the iconoclast's declaration of independence from the very folk movement that sired him.

Masters of War should have been number one on this list, without a doubt.

Honestly,
this is a great choice for this list.
Bob Dylan does not want to be associated with the folk movement any longer and of course "Masters of War", "Blowin' in the Wind","A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall", and countless number of his other songs protest something in one way or another, yet this is protesting everything that people believed him to be. So this is the perfect choice.
"Well, I try my best
To be just like I am,
But everybody wants you
To be just like them."

I like Bob Dylan a lot. I always have. However, when I read his book, Chronicles, I discovered that this guy can be to the left and right in his views. That makes me really respect him. He doesn't care who will love him or who will hate him. He said over and over that it was not his job to honor any political movement. He despised those on the left that pushed their causes in front of his face. I respect him. If you notice, he does not attack a politician here and there like some of these ing yangs. He attacks ideas and situations. I was really happy when he went electric. I was watching PBS a week or so ago and saw him singing Maggie's Farm while many bood him. He had this look on his face that said, I don't give a hoot what you people think. He is one of the VERY few who march to his own drummer. We should all be like this but most of us don't have the guts.

>>>And what about "Subterranean Homesick Blues"?--"Don't follow leaders" and "You don't need a weatherman to tell which way the wind blows", etc.

i WANT TO COMPLIMENT YOUR EFFORTS IN THE CELEBRATION OF MUSIC. I AM A WRITER AND MUSICIAN. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE READ, LISTENED,AND COMMENTED. SORRY BUT I HAVE MANY SUGGESTIONS ALL IN THIS MESSAGE. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO BREAK VARIOUS TYPES OF MUSIC AND THEMES DOWN.
SUGGESTION: CONSIDER CHANGING THE WAY YOU TAKE COMMENTS, AND DESIGN IT SO THAT YOU CAN CAPTURE THE HITS YOU GET WHO SUPPORT YOUR TOP 20, BUT ALSO CONSIDER ADDING SOME OF THEIR SUGGESTIONS. YOU WOULD HAVE TO BRAIN STRONG THE ULTIMATE OUTCOME. MY POINT IS IT IS GREAT YOU ARE OFFERING THIS FORMATE. YET, NONE OF US IN MUSIC CAN FORGET THAT THE LISTENER RULES, SO TO NOT GIVE MORE CREDITABILITY TO THE COMMENTS SECTION FLYS IN THE FACE OF THIS SACRED PRINCIPLE. YOU COULD HAVE A VIEWERS' TOP 20 OR A COMBINATION OF YOUR'S AND THEIRS, OR SOME MIDDLE GROUND. WHICH GOES TO MY SECOND POINT.
CONSIDER REFINING SOME OF YOU TOPICS, AND DEFINING THEM WITH MORE CLARITY. CASE IN POINT, PROTEST SONGS: THIS REALLY NEED DEFINING AND SEVERAL CATAGORIES UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE MORE SPECIFIC. BE MORE SPECIFIC. FOR INSTANCE BEST TOP 20 PROTEST SONGS THAT REPRESENT A REPRESSED PEOPLE IN AMERICA. I WOULD LIST BOB DYLAN'S BLOWING IN THE WIND AS #1, THEN THERE'S ARETHA FRANKLIN'S VERSION OF OTIS REDDING "RESPECT" BECAUSE OF THE SLANT SHE PUT ON IT AND IT'S TIMELYNESS WHEN IT WAS RELEASED. WHICH BRINGS ME TO ANOTHER POINT. IT IS ONE THING TO WRITE A PROTEST SONGS, IT IS ANOTHER TO SING IT. TO DO BOTH AND HAVE THE TALENT AND COURAGE TO RELEASE A RECORD LIKE THAT IS HUGE! ALSO GIVE CONSIDERATION TO LIST THE WRITERS ON THE SONGS YOU LIST IF THEY ARE NOT THE ARTIST. AND FINALLY, AS TO SAD SONGS: THE SAME PRINCIPLES APPLY, I AGREE A SAD SONG IS A SAD SONG, YET IT IS UP TO THE LISTENER'S EARS, AND THEY MIGHT NOT APPRECIATE SONGWRITER'S VERSES ARTIST, YET IT WOULD BE AN EDUCATION IF YOU INCLUDED BOTH. THE ULTIMATE SAD SONG LIST TO ME WOULD BE SONGS THAT WERE WRITTEN, OR EVEN CO-AUTHORED BY THE ARTIST AS A PRE-REQIESITE FOR ONE LIST, AND MANY ANOTHER FOR THE SADDEST SONGS THAT HAVE HAD THE MOST IMPACE ON THE WORLD AS ANOTHER. PS. TEARS FROM HEAVEN IS A VERY SAD SONG WHICH MANY COMMENTS WERE GIVEN CREDIT, YET WIL JENNINGS IS THE LYRICISTS ON THAT SONG, WHO IS ONE OF THE GREATS, INCLUDING THE THEME FROM TITANTIC, AND HUNDRED'S MORE. YET THE SADDEST SONG S TO ME ARE THE ONES THAT ARE BOTH WRITTEN AND SUNG BUY THE ARTIST, YOU CAN'T GET MORE HEART FELT THAT THAN PROVIDED IT IS A KILLER SONG. THANK YOU AND FORGIVE MY NO SPELL CHECK.

Maggie's Farm as a protest song that means something? Please how many people knnow of this song other than hard-care Dylan fans? #1 should be Times they are a-changin' which was the theme song of the start of the 60's war protest.

Dylan don't care. Just "a bunch of words strung together."
