Women Who Rock Right Now: No. 10

This summer marks the 10th anniversary of Lilith Fair, the all-female music festival founded by Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan. Now we celebrate the new generation of women who have taken up the torch passed by McLachlan, Sheryl Crow, Fiona Apple and other ladies of Lilith, and who continue to redefine what it means to be a woman who rocks.

    Who: Beth Ditto
    Birthplace: Searcy, Ark.
    Sound: Dance punk

Frontwoman for the Gossip, Ditto -- a plus-sized lesbian with a Southern drawl and a soulful howl -- challenges the skinny white boy indie-rock canon with riot grrrl mentality and a disco backbeat. Her firecracker social consciousness has earned an avid fan in Rosie O'Donnell, who toured alongside Ditto on this summer's True Colors tour.

What about Amy Lee of Evanescence? She's probably the best female singer in rock right now, and her band's great. She's an amazing singer and, by the way, who are these people? Hayley Williams of Paramore is awesome too, she's a great singer. Most of these people aren't even real rock. Amy Winehouse? Yeah right.

    Hi,
Those are amazing female musicians and singers but you forgot to mention Carmireli. She's the 18 year old singer/songwriter/actress from New York. She's making her way to the top of the entertainment business in record time. Check her out at www.myspace.com/carmireli.

This list stinks! You call it "Women who rock" but the musical styles include reggea, dance, pop, soul, folk, and anti-folk(?). Where is the rock?

Only one of your "Rocking" women actually plays rock, and that's "indie rock", which means their music is not very popular.

We are not going to jump all over these artists simply because you say they're cool.

Paramore is more pop than rock. There isn't any edge to them at all.

M.I.A, Lilly Allen, & Amy Winehouse are phenomenal female artist but they don't really sing rock. They are inspirational cause they aren't the norm yet the are leaders but sometimes they do get a little out of context. But I still love them.

check out the band blemish in phoenix, az. a chick that looks just plain girl hot and that does not fit the way she performs. she will make you double take and get whiplash for both reasons. you will not believe that what you hear comes from what you see and the stage presence is unbelievable!
    live on forever punk rock!!!

Just because most of these women don't sing rock music doesn't mean they don't "Rock!" Way to take something so literal. Come on people, you can't seriously be that dense. And just because it's indie doesn't mean it's not popular. It's just not popular to you because all you listen to is MTV and other bs mainstream artists.
