When They Rocked: 1968-69
The Archies were the Beatles of virtual bands -- innovators whose sugary hooks and catchy choruses spawned a legion of inferior imitators (The Bedrock Rockers, Jabberjaw). The Riverdale High quintet scored several hits in the late '60s, but 'Sugar, Sugar'-- the No. 1 song of 1969 -- remains the band's claim to fame.

A couple corrections to Amelie's comment;
The female backup singer for the Archies was not Cheryl Ladd, it was Toni Wine. And I'm not sure, but I think that lyric is, "I'm gonna make your life so sweet" (It was a kids' cartoon after all).
Cheryl Ladd did sing backup as Cheri Stoppelmoore in Josie & the Pussycats.
How about that back-up singer, Cheryl Stoppelmoore, who chimed "I'm gonna make love so sweet!"? You might remember her by her stage name, Cheryl Ladd.
