Polyphonic Spree Ring In Lollapalooza Under Scorching Sun
- Posted on Aug 3rd 2007 4:00PM by Benjy Eisen

The first day of Lollapalooza got off to a blistering start -- literally -- with enough heat and direct sunlight to theoretically power all of founder Perry Farrell's greening initiatives. It's too bad that Tim DeLaughter's cultish collective Polyphonic Spree shed their light robes in favor of heavy black military-style threads. One thing DeLaughter couldn't shed, however, is his possessed presentation, throwing his arms into the sky to praise the "great day," jumping around in front of his troupe and leading the audience through what he described as a "campfire song," titled 'It's the Sun.' As if there weren't enough people on stage in matching Spree uniforms, DeLaughter invited the entire Chicago Tap Theatre up to dance to the band's celebratory, anthemic wall of sound. And, as if on cue, when the band started singing "love, love, love," the white robes came out -- just in time for a cover of Nirvana's 'Lithium.'

Oh my god, those tap dancers rocked! Their energy, their rhythm -- Chicago Tap Theatre is hot. I am definitely going to check out their next performance. Their website (chicagotaptheatre.com) says they dance to everything from David Bowie to Sia to Portishead, and they just finished a story show about a superhero -- how cool is that! Go see these guys -- they're insane!
