Women Behind the Songs: 'Candy Says'
- Posted by Spinner

From the Velvet Underground's 'Candy Says' (1969)
Lou Reed wrote this as an homage to Warhol "superstar" Candy Darling, who came to New York a shy young man and emerged as a glamorous blond woman. Reed channeled both Candy's delicacy and steeliness in lines like "I've come to hate my body/And all that it requires in this world" -- a reference to the female hormones that enabled her gender change but ultimately took her life. He also name-checked her in 'Walk on the Wild Side,' recalling, "In the back room, she was everybody's darling." Listen to 'Candy Says'

Bee Bee and Irishman55j should get together!
He did not leave as a young woman, he left as a mutilated man. No matter how he chose to mutilate himself, he was still a man, albeit a sick one.

Anyone who wants to cut off a body part to "fulfill their innerself" has got a problem. You are the "Moron", because she died from the hormones. It had nothing to do with anyone's approval only her own off balance desires. I don't need to read about transsexuals. As a society we slap a big name on mental illnesses like Gender Dysphora for something that is simply self loathing. It is an extreme form of self mutilation. Everyone tries to the fix the outside, but sometimes its the inside that needs help. Get a grip and grow up. You should be able to converse about a subject without reverting to name calling. I actually feel really sorry for Candy, especially since she was surrounded by people that encouraged the sex change. No one should die like that or feel so miserable they need to completely change their identity. Instead of supporting this crap in a liberal world, I say support the person in becoming secure within their self. So don't you feel stupid, Nadia? I'm not a bigot, a racist, or a gay basher...I just looked at the issue from a purely subjective psychological point of view. Obviously for you, it hit too close to home.

Go get informed about transsexuals, and gender dysphoria, before you open your big mouth. It is a serious aspect of some people's lives- not something one does on a whim for "attention". People like you are the reason those who suffer from these problems end up committing suicide or turning to drugs. Moron.

August 22 2007 at 8:54 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDid anyone actually read the article? He/she/it - whatever - was a man. She couldn't be anyone's wife/mother/sister/etc. I'm sorry Candy died, but all too often people try to change the wrong things about their lives. Its your life make the most of it with whaat you have been given. Self mutilation is not the answer - let's face it cross dressing and sex changes = attention seeking behavior.
