Women Behind the Songs: 'My Sharona'
- Posted by Spinner

From the Knack's 'My Sharona' (1979)
Knack frontman Doug Fieger was a twentysomething rock journeyman with a dirty-old-man streak when he met 16-year-old Sharona, who would give him his place in rock history. Fieger threw caution -- and age-of-consent laws -- to the wind and wooed Sharona, who inspired the song that bears her name, and she ended up posing for the single's picture sleeve. They remained a couple for four years, leaving Fieger as one of rock's great one-hit wonders and Sharona one of L.A.'s more successful real estate agents. Listen to 'My Sharona'

The Knack was NOT a one-hit wonder. They hit #11 with "Good Girls Don't," the follow-up to "My Sharona"(and a better song, in my opinion), and they scored another Top 40 hit in 1980 with "Baby Talks Dirty."

June 10 2009 at 6:19 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI was 21 when the 45 rpm single came out and I'm sure the cover left me absolutely no choice but to buy it. She seemed dangerously close to under-age and I felt guilty looking, but that was - and still is - a terrific and stunning picture.
The good news for all you inconsiderate dregs is that every day brings you closer to big guts, hairy backs and bald spots. What a catch you'll be! And as the younger kids laugh at how repulsive you are, remember that you helped raise them that way. Unfortunately, you will never comprehend the things that make women wonderful and you will bring a lot of unhappiness to the poor wretch who marries you.
A woman is the heart of her family - the sun that her family orbits. I'm sure they don't appreciate the way you dis Sharona. Should we all call your mother a skank and laugh at her? Alas, no - why hurt her for your failure to reach even the lowest bar of humanity? So go ahead and show us how stupid your are. Like King George, your motto should be "Wrong 'til the end, and proud of it!". We're far more impressed with her than we are with you.
The picture sleeve to the 45 rpm single was slightly racy for 1979, seeing how Sharona was under-aged AND not wearing a bra?!? It was one of the more interesting picture sleeves of the 70s:

The Knack a one-hit-wonder? They had at least two
other great songs: "Good Girls Don't" and "That's What The Little Girls Do".
Wow! That was a blast from my past. It felt good.
The song still sounds great today. And, for those making comments on how pretty, or not so pretty a person is, Just stop it! Don't be so damn shallow, and insecure.
I'd bet most of you don't have movie star looks. If you were truly good looking, it would not be of a concern to you how others looks,If by some slim chance you are good looking, you can kiss those looks goodbye, and hope for not to bad for an old fart if you live long enough.
