Women Behind the Songs: 'Peggy Sue'
- Posted by Spinner

From Buddy Holly's 'Peggy Sue' (1957)
Holly wrote some lovely songs for his wife, Maria Elena, but his best-known hit was actually inspired by the woman who would later become his drummer's wife. Peggy Sue was a classmate of Holly's at Texas' Lubbock High when the song -- which the singer flirted with re-titling 'Cindy Lou' -- topped the charts. She's currently working on an autobiography titled 'Whatever Happened to Peggy Sue?' Listen to 'Peggy Sue'

I've always heard that the original name was "Cindy Lou" in reference to Buddy's Niece, but he changed it as a favor to Jerry for changing his drumming to the beat Buddy liked better.

June 10 2009 at 12:32 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis book is so inaccurate; the inaccuracies are also proveable. One proof is the booklet included in The Complete Buddy Holly set. It contains actual photos, letters, Buddy's notes from his looseleaf from late 1957. The song "Cindy Lou" is on the list..not "Peggy Sue". I have some of the original photos and letters to me from Jerry in 1957, and the copy of a letter from Buddy to his parents which tells a differnt story. By the way, I am the Yvonne Hall so hatefully described in her book. With his mom and mine being the close friends they were, I would not have had to ask if they were really married..I knew..probably almost as soon as she did. I certainly did not need an introduction or get acquainted session since we had been in plane geometry together and sat across the aisle from each other. I was not pining away for Jerry as she implied. I, too, was getting married the next year. Jerry and I have remained friends, however, through the years. I will be glad to discuss all of this with her face to face anytime she would like. She could have written a beautiful book, but chose instead to write trash. I have written a letter to her which I will send to other before her for obvious reasons.

November 22 2007 at 3:35 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI was named after this song. It has always had a special place in my heart and even more now that I am older and can appreciate Buddy Holly and his talent. I'd like to meet the woman whom the song was written for. I'm sure she would have some interesting stories about Buddy Holly.
November 22 2007 at 1:07 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyBUDDY HOLLY!! What can I say? He was and always will be one of the greatest rockers to come out of the 50's. He was way ahead of his time. Rock was so good back then. Now, we have a lot of garbage.

August 22 2007 at 3:43 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyKinda strange to see this lady attacked for being a nobody with a boring life by people with so little going on there's time to read and write about her.
Someone who knows I'm too boring to feel superior
Married to Buddy Holly's drummer? Sounds interesting. She may just have some interesting things to write about.
