Women Behind the Songs: 'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes'
- Posted by Spinner

From Crosby, Stills & Nash's 'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes' (1969)
Written by a man on the verge of a catastrophic breakup, this Stephen Stills composition chronicles his love for his longtime girlfriend, folk singer Judy Collins, and the differences that were driving them apart. The last verse of 'Judy Blue Eyes,' sung in Spanish, has absolutely nothing to do with Collins and instead focuses on an unfulfilled desire to take a trip to Cuba. We're presuming there's a veiled reference to Gloria Estefan in there someplace, but our language skills are a little rusty. Listen to 'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes'

August 08 2008 at 11:34 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe last part is in broken spanish, the lines are:
Que linda me la trae pa Cuba
La reina de la Mar Caribe
Quiero solo visitarme alli
y que triste que no puedo vaya
Stills did know some spanish as he attended school in Costa Rica in the mid 60's.
In original recording is it hard to understand the last two lines, it is easier watching the Woodstook live performance.
Hey, Jossy (aka "butt face") I think that Judy is beautiful (I know her brother, Tom, quite well), she has always been a talented singer, and she filled an important nitch between "traditional" folk singers and Joan Baez - Joan was criticized for having too pure and perfect a voice - folk singers - male & female - are supposed, according to this mind set, to have "average", unpolished voices (an attitude as dumb as Jossy's) while Judy's is very good and "acceptable." While we're at it, why don't YOU, Jossy, come up with a long list of hit music on your own, and contribute something positive to society!
