Best Opening Lyrics: No. 1

--Rick James' 'Superfreak'
And he was a very kinky dude: The funk legend would later go to prison for forcing a woman to be his sex slave.

Ya gotta be kidding me. One very famous and classic first line was overlooked: "Crazy, but that's how it goes" -Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne

I would have to go with either "Back in Black!" from none other than Back in Black by ACDC or "Ridin' Down the Highway!" from A Long Way to the Top also by ACDC. Two of the most memorable lines from rock and roll history and maybe even ever.

The best line ever in a rock song isn't the first line, though. Bob Seger, "Against the Wind":
"...wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then."

Pretty good list and comments -- much better than your best protest songs -- even if you did blow it with your No. 1. Should have been "I read the news today, oh boy," from the Beatles' "Day in the Life."
Maybe it's just the ineffably sad way John said "Oh boy," but that line still haunts today and probably will forever.

The best first line to any song ever written is "The screen door slammed, Mary's dress waved..." Thunder Road by Bruce Springsteen

You stole my "thunder" but you are absolutely right. The words to this song are pure poetry from beginning to end. Great post!

Oh Come on! Yeah there are a FEW good lines in this list, but ANY Bruce Springsteen openning line would trounce any song on this list! "Born down in a dead-man's town; first kick I took was went I hit the ground...", "Got a wife and kids in Baltimore, Jack; I went out for a ride and I never went back!", "We busted out of class had to get away from those fools; we learned more from a three minute record baby than we ever learned in school", "In the day we sweat it out in the streets of a runaway American dream; at night we ride through mansions of glory in suicide machines...", or "I come from down in the valley where mister, when you're young / they bring you up to do like your daddy done." I could go on... BUT WHY BOTHER?!! Case closed!

I like the idea, but I agree with Barry, the first line isn't necessarily the one that gets you...."hold on to 16 as long as you can, changes come around real soon make us women and men" J. Mellencamp That line in "Against the Wind" has always been a favorite of mine!!
Peterat 8-06-2007
Nikko... Thank you!! Yes, I agree!

What about 'It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder how I keep from going under' by Grandmaster Flash. One of the first..one of the best.
Poughkeepsie Johnat 8-06-2007
I've got one for you. Or more appropiately, two for the price of one.
"When I say I'm in love, you best believe, I'm in love, L-U-V!"
That's from "Give Him A Great Big Kiss" by The Shangri-La's and "Looking For A Kiss" by The New York Dolls.
Ethan Stanislawskiat 8-06-2007
More obscure, but better than a lot of those:
"Our own correspondent is sorry to tell, of an uneasy time, that all is not well" - "Reuters," Wire.
If this was a list of opening lines of an album, the Pink Flag opener would be in the top 10.
Seanat 8-06-2007
Not a first line, but my favorite one has always been...
"I gave you everything you ever wanted...it wasn't what you wanted."
U2 - So Cruel
