One of the few Haggard songs I actually like. Good beat. Love the line "White lightnin' is still the biggest thrill of all'.

THE OPENING LINE IS CORRECT. I am a haggard expert, have everything he ever recorded.
For those that don't know, Merle is the best country vocalist that ever lived. Listen to some of his early stuff---workin man blues, mama tried, sing me back home, I started loving you again---merle had the purest, perfect tone voice. If you haven't heard merle, treat yourself to the best ever!
