--Sex Pistols' 'Anarchy in the UK'
These four words say it all, and the Sex Pistols could have stopped right there. Actually, they pretty much did.
Listen to the line!

this lyric never made sense to me, despite Mr. Rotten's pride in having written it. An anti-christ is said to appear as a leader and gain many followers opposing Christ and the church. An anarchist is a person who promotes disorder and follows no ruling system. Although an anti-christ would not follow the commandments of the church,he or she would be part of and organized group; this is a glaring contradiction. And Johnny Rotten is a douche.

Well Deke, think about it for a second; we have someone who brings about chaos through words and treachery (the Anti-Christ) and someone who brings about chaos through rallying against the system and simple rebelliousness (the Anarchist). Both of these beings have been confused for each other at least once, they're both feared yet also have the ability to spawn a legion of followers to aid in their conquest, and they both rhyme. Case closed.

"How about... Rufus Wainwright's 'Hallelujah'"
Actually Red Rose, that would be Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," as that is the man who wrote it, it appeared on his 1984 release "Various Positions." Rufus's cover is a good one, but my money would have to be on John Cale or Jeff Buckley for the best cover of that particularly wonderful song. Though oddly their versions all differ from Cohen's original as they all sing the poem as it was originally written, and Cohen as he often did made some changes from the original poem when he recorded it as a song.
Namaste

Another rip-off of The New York Dolls. Johnny Thunders to be more precise, the Godfather of punk. The Pistols were another Monkees like creation of Malcom McClaren, The Guy who ruined the NY Dolls to begin with. It was al about shock value. The Monkees had more talent.

A great tune to shout when you're totally pissed off at everything. It's also great to turn some heads and offend cretin fuddy-duddies.

This group did not know the gravity of the lyric of that song. If they feel truly feel that way they will truly regret it one day. The Bible says we will answer for every idle word. It also tells us thst every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

i second that notion

Please tell me you're kidding. I'm no prude, but "I Am an Antichrist" and Patti Smith's "Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine" are repugnant and blasphemous. Is everyone losing their minds?
How about Graham Nash's "Military Madness," "Better Days," Grand Funk's "I Can Feel Him in the Morning," Barry Manilow's "Could It Be Magic," Rufus Wainwright's "Hallelujah" and "I've Seen All Good People" by Yes. Yikes! I can't believe what I just read.

Great opening line. Totally captures what the "refined" viewed bands such as the Sex Pistols and punk rock music in general. Perhaps Johnny Rotten was "an antichrist," but who is "a Christ?" Victorian prudes? The cocaine-bloated record industries? Antichrist is used just as symbolically as Lucifer is used in :Sympathy for the Devil."
