--LL Cool J's 'Mama Said Knock You Out!'
And, ironically enough, these words announced hip-hop's first major ... er, rebound.
Listen to the line!

I love how a lot of you avid rock fans like to knock rap. Hav you lisioned to the lyrics in some rock songs they plaine worship the devil and encourage drug use. My point is most music has good and bad dont knock something untill you try it. Why wouldnt rap be on this list. It is all mostly lyrical based.

i continue to be amazed at the amount of time (so called) haters of rap spend talking about how much they hate it. i mean, if i hated you, i wouldn't say shit about you--why would i? reminds me of the disco days, when all these non-dancing, non-girl getting, non-fun having people were dissing disco--blowing up records and nonsense like that. dumb-asses had already bought the records, so who were they really hurting? well, guess what folks? disco is back-and hip hop is here and not going anywhere...just grit your teeth and bear it...and try dancing-you might like it.

L.L. is one of my favorites but this is not his best opening lyric. What about "nobody can rap quite like I can, I'll take a mucle bound man and put his face in the sand"(B.A.D.)or "When I'm alone in my room, sometimes I stare at the wall and in the back of my mind I hear my conscience call"(I Need Love). Now these are some great lyrics!

I like LL and the song, but no way should this be ahead of Jimmy and All along the Watchtower

FINALLY someone posting comments has some musical sense! Thank you Dave for your much needed comment. It was bad enough they put 50 cent on this damn list, now they have to add LL? Lyrically he has nothing to offer the music world. I forgot his music moments after it began; if music is what you would call it.

to you and all you other snobs judging the merits of this song--why? it's obvious the song is not for you, you don't like it, so why waste time commenting on it? people like you can't wait to talk about how worthless this music is, but if you know of another music other than hip hop more influential within the last, oh i'll say the last 25 years, tell us. it may not be music to you, but to a whole hell of a lot of us, this music was and is life, so you go back to your little corner bar where they play bob seger and that old time rock and roll and remain bitter.

YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING!

Ok, Chris, pay attention, YES, Bob Dylan wrote "All Along The Watch Tower," YES, Bob Dylan recorded it, YES Jimi Hendrix covered it, and YES BOB DYLAN HAS OPENLY SAID JIMI'S VERSION IS BETTER, and Jimi's version is the most recognizable version, hence its inclusion here, my only question to you is, why the hate against jimi? Arguably the greatest rock/blues guitarist ever.
Rogerat 8-07-2007
I am all aobut diverse music, but why THIS song on THIS list? LL Cool J? Honestly?
chrisat 8-07-2007
josh this has nothing to do with hate on jimi....but be realistic and read what youre looking at--a list of lyrics....LYRICS....looks like the hate is towards bob huh?
sarazorat 8-07-2007
The list should be "Most Recognized" Opening Lyrics.... not "Best"

Excellent choice. This line sticks with you and is hilarious to apply to real life situations.
